It’s rarely happened so quickly. Less than four weeks after the complete takeover of HKM by the Salzgitter AG The contract for the new electric arc furnace was awarded today.
From 1 August, we will be launching the transformation of HKM in the south of Duisburg.
With the start of construction, the site is becoming an integral part of the Salzgitter Group’s transformation strategy. I am proud of the pace at which this is happening.

What we have commissioned is no ordinary facility. The electric arc furnace at HKM will be the largest in Germany and the second largest in the European Union:
✅ Capacity: up to 2.5 million tonnes of steel per year
    ✅ Tapping weight: 285 tonnes
✅ Technology: Conti furnace with continuous scrap feeding
    ✅ Completion: 2029

However, it is not the size of the plant that is decisive, but its technological design. The flexible use of scrap, HBI and DRI, together with efficient energy management – including the utilisation of flue gas heat – creates the conditions for competitive, low-carbon steel production.

Today’s award is far more than just another milestone to tick off the list. It demonstrates what is possible when industrial policy ambition and entrepreneurial determination come together. The €200 million in funding from the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia confirms that industrial expertise here is not only being preserved, but also expanded and made fit for the future.

Special thanks go to the entire HKM team. Behind this award lie months of hard work by people who have driven this project forward with genuine conviction.
