Job interviews
A job interview somewhere:
„My current employer? There’s a lot wrong with it – this and that are missing, and anyway…“
„Right, we'll be in touch.“
Here’s the cancellation. It makes sense, I suppose. 🤷♀️
I think it’s a mistake to badmouth your current or previous employer. There will be reasons for changing jobs, but if you focus on everything that isn’t working elsewhere rather than on what you yourself want to achieve or contribute, you certainly won’t make a positive impression.
Loyalty and a certain degree of respect towards former employers are, for me, essential and a sign of professionalism.
The time you spent together certainly wasn’t all bad, and at some point you probably worked together in a spirit of trust and, in the best-case scenario, enjoyed some good times too. Remembering this speaks to a respectful way of interacting, which is also important in a new role.
What do you think? Is it acceptable to criticise your former employer during a job interview?
From the series: Hashtag#recruiting A bit of an old-timer – perhaps not quite an old-timer, but definitely a topic in recruitment
