  • Mid-year report: yes or no?

Imagine you’re applying for a job somewhere, and you receive the following response: „Please submit an interim reference from your current employer.“

BOOM! What now? You haven’t told anyone that you’re looking round! Of course, you’re entitled to ask for an interim reference at any time – but who actually does that without a second thought? And if your boss then asks, „Why? Are you looking for a new job?“, things get awkward…

In my view, mid-term reports have the same problem as end-of-year reports: they are often vague, standardised and offer no real added value. We know full well how honest and personalised they really are.

As a company, I wouldn’t ask any applicant for an interim reference. Why put someone in an awkward position when you can find out much more anyway through open discussions, or even tests or references, for that matter?

What do you think? Mid-term reports – yes or no?

Before I hire anyone, I ring their previous employers – I don’t care about data protection either!

Paper is patient; you can get away with telling a lie, but on the phone you find out quickly what you need to know!

Oh yes, you can do it that way, but I’ve never done it like that before – it’s a new approach for me... Best regards, Karl Schneider
